Kilambakkam Railway Station is set to be constructed for Rs. 20 Crores. The construction activities are scheduled to commence in the next 4 months.
Currently, Koyambedu functions as the primary Bus Terminus for outstation buses in Chennai Metro City. The Koyambedu Mofussil Bus Terminus can accommodate 270 buses simultaneously and handles 2000 buses every day, serving 2 lakh passengers per day.
Due to its location within the heart of Chennai Metro City, the operations at Koyambedu Bus Terminus lead to severe traffic congestion. This congestion becomes especially acute during festival seasons and holiday periods.
To address this issue, plans are underway to construct new roads from Ayyanchery to Meenakshipuram, Aadhanur to Madambakkam, and from CVK Road to Oorappakkam. These roads aim to facilitate smooth movement of buses from Kilambakkam without encountering traffic congestion. Additionally, an Omni-Bus Station is also planned at Mudichur.
In this context, the Southern Railway General Manager has approved the application submitted by the Tamil Nadu State Government for the construction of a railway station at Kilambakkam.
It has already been announced that the State Government of Tamil Nadu will cover the construction expenses of Rs. 20 Crores for the Kilambakkam Railway Station.
The Chennai Metro Development Authority (CMDA) has contributed a fund of Rs. 40 Lakhs as the initial phase to the Southern Railways.
The construction activities are scheduled to commence in another 4 months. Furthermore, there are plans to complete the construction of the Kilambakkam Railway Station, featuring 3 platforms, within a year.
The trains operating on the suburban Chennai-Chengalpattu track will make stops at Kilambakkam Railway Station, which is located between Vandalur and Oorappakkam. This convenient positioning allows residents of Chennai residing in other urban areas to easily access the Kilambakkam Railway Station.
