Chennai, India - In a recent development, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced plans to auction abandoned vehicles across the city in collaboration with the police department, as revealed by Mayor R Priya during a review meeting at Ripon Building on Wednesday.

The GCC had previously issued notices stating their intention to clear two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and heavy vehicles that had been left unattended on public roads and spaces under the corporation`s jurisdiction.

During field inspections conducted by civic authorities, a total of 1,038 abandoned vehicles were identified within the city. Despite the corporation`s initial notification requiring vehicle owners to remove their vehicles from public roads within 15 days, no action was taken.

Mayor Priya emphasized that if the owners fail to claim their vehicles, the city corporation, in collaboration with the city police, will proceed with the auction of these vehicles starting from September 1.

In the 2023-2024 budget report, Mayor Priya highlighted the inconveniences caused to the public by abandoned vehicles on the roads, including traffic congestion and the misuse of such spaces for dumping garbage, making it challenging for sanitation workers to maintain cleanliness.

The mayor previously committed to counting and identifying abandoned vehicles and taking appropriate action to address this issue.

The meeting at which this decision was made included Deputy Mayor M Magesh Kumaar, Chennai Corporation Commissioner J Radhakrishnan, Additional Commissioner (Revenue and Finance) R Lalitha, Additional Commissioner of Police R Sudhakar, and other senior officials.
