As the existing contract expires in the month of October in 2023, the GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation would float fresh tenders for improved parking management systems on all roads belonging to Chennai.

Yesterday, Chennai Mayor R. Priya held a review meeting and in the meeting it was decided to explore several options for an improved parking system. The meeting also witnessed the presence of the GCC Commissioner Mr. J. Radhakrishnan.

The private service providers have been managing atleast 5000 parking slots in various places identified by GCC. Information is that the civic body has identified as many as12000 parking slots in 15 GCC zones in the city.

The implementation of major infrastructure projects like metro rail and flood mitigation works in the 4 river basins etc have reduced the parking space now in Chennai. Therefore streamlining the parking management is necessary now. As a part of streamlining, the Chennai Mayor wants the parked vehicles along the roads to be removed. To study the issues associated with parking space, a committee has been formed now. The study has been conducted by the GCC and a final decision would be taken after the month of October.
