Barging into the metro trains is a common scene at the metro stations now in Chennai.

The crowd management and passenger rules have gone for a toss now in the metro trains in Chennai. After the Coronavirus pandemic, there has been a huge increase in the footfalls in the metro trains in Chennai but there has been no proper crowd management.

The passengers do not adhere to the proper procedure and boarding and deboarding the metro trains has gone out of control at the platforms in Chennai.

Huge increase in ridership:

It must be remembered that in June month the overall passenger ridership in the metro trains in the city was 74.06 lakhs and it rose to 82.53 lakhs in July month. There was a huge increase of 7.93 lakhs in just one month.

The travelling in the metro trains in Chennai has gained popularity now and that is due to several factors like connectivity, easy commute, safety etc. With lots of enthusiasm, many now are expecting the metro phase 2 services to commence.

Big issue of boarding and deboarding:

Especially in the peak hours, quick boarding and deboarding the passengers is a huge challenge now for the CMRL. In addition, managing the crowd is another issue. It was later explained by a CMRL staff member that police personnel and CMRL staff have been guiding the passengers. He added that in the peak hours the passengers must show some patience to wait and get into the metro trains.

According to a passenger at Alandur metro station it was clear that it was a challenge to board the metro trains especially in the peak hours. People would barge into the trains even during other times of the day. He concluded that  it was very much important  to have proper crowd management and strict regulations for boarding and deboarding the trains etc.
