There are many vacant plots and abandoned houses in Chennai and these have become sites for dumping. This has made the residents unhappy now. The GCC has started to issue notices to the owners of vacant plots and abandoned houses as they have become an illegal dumping ground and mosquitoes breeding place.
It was later explained by GCC Commissioner Mr. J. Radhakrishnan that many spots in the city have turned into blind spots like EB junction boxes, river banks, vacant plots, abandoned houses etc for garbage dumping and for construction waste dumping etc. He added that the residents do not spend money to dispose of items like sofas, debris etc.
It must be recalled that recently a study was conducted and it was revealed that by the year 2040 the waste generated in Chennai would increase from 6143 metric tonnes to 11793 metric tonnes. Mr. Radhakrishnan explained that GCC aims to lower the garbage by the year 2030.
