Intense rainfall battered Chennai and its surrounding areas on Thursday night, with Adyar Eco-Park registering the highest rainfall in the city over the past 24 hours, recording 8 centimeters.
Northern Tamil Nadu is expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall for the next two days due to robust westerly winds, as the southwest monsoon favors the region. P Senthamarai Kannan, the director of the area cyclone center at the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), explained, "We have been receiving monsoon rain, and as the southwest monsoon is favorable to Tamil Nadu, it alters the wind flow pattern. Under its influence, northern districts, including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Villupuram, are likely to witness moderate to heavy rainfall coupled with thunderstorm activity for the next 48 hours."
While daytime hours are expected to remain relatively bright, evening rains are predicted for northern Tamil Nadu. Chennai and its suburbs are likely to see maximum temperatures reaching around 36 degrees Celsius and 37 degrees Celsius, respectively. With the wind flow pattern shifting towards Tamil Nadu, strong winds with speeds of 45 to 55 kilometers per hour are anticipated to prevail over south Tamil Nadu and the Gulf of Mannar until Sunday. As a result, fishermen are advised to refrain from venturing into the sea.
In the past 24 hours, several areas in Tamil Nadu received significant rainfall, including Ranipet, Coimbatore, Tiruvallur, and Nilgiris, each receiving 7 centimeters. Adyar, Mugalivakkam, Anna University, Tambaram, Valasaravakkam, Chennai Airport, and Alandur recorded 6 centimeters each. Additionally, Kolathur, Kodambakkam, Ambattur, the DGP office, Royapuram, Vanagaram, Perungudi, and YMCA Nandanam experienced 5 centimeters of rainfall each.
