With just a short time now present for the onset of NE monsoon, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has taken up important work now. The news is that GCC would complete flood mitigation works in as many as 37 vulnerable locations in Chennai before monsoon. In 2023, more than 4.7km of the 5.8km stretch of Mambalam Canal was de-silted. Point to be noted is that the work on de-silting the remaining 1.1km of this canal would be completed soon.
During the monsoon period in 2022, in Manali in north Chennai one location reported 3ft to 5ft of water stagnation and other locations reported less than 3ft of water stagnation.
There were reports about 2 feet of water stagnation in as many as in 8 locations belonging to zones like Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Manali, Anna Nagar and Ambattur.
Largest number of vulnerable location:
It must be noted that Ambattur zone with 16 areas reporting water stagnation has got the largest number of vulnerable locations in Chennai. It is noteworthy that Anna Nagar reported water stagnation in as many as in 9 locations such as Parthasarathy Street in ward 98, Bharathi Nagar in ward 97 etc. Since 1st of January 2023, Chennai has received 82cms of rain when compared to the average SW monsoon rainfall of 44cms.
Ahead of onset of NE monsoons, work on shutters with pumping facilities in areas like Stephenson Road in north Chennai etc would get completed. This would help to prevent water stagnation in the important Pulianthope in Chennai.
