When the infrastructure is in place, the new consumers would get the electricity supply within a week. If not, then the new consumers could demand Tangedco to pay Rs 100 per day for a maximum of 10 days. This was according to the newly amended TN Electricity Distribution Code.
It is learnt that the revised code would allow Tangedco to delay the connection beyond 7 days only when the supply to the premises requires an extension of distribution mains. Truth is that even Tangedco would not be able to extend the time specified in the code.
It was confirmed by an officer from Tangedco that working instructions about the new code were not received by them. It is known that Tangedco takes an average 30 days to effect new low tension supply. This was the maximum period that was permitted as per the old rules. As per the amended code it was important for Tangedco to inform the consumers in case of incomplete application within 3 days. It must not be forgotten that earlier the staff took 7 days to return the applications for rectification and re-submission etc. To effect some new LT connections, Tangedco took 59days in April.
