Extension of metro train services from Koyambedu to Avadi has been recommended by CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited. This would be for an elevated stretch of 16.07kms with 15 stations. The estimated cost for the extension work would be Rs 6376.18 crores.
Not only that, CML has also recommended the extension of metro train services from Siruseri to Kilambakkam via Kelambakkam for a length of 23.5km. There would be 12 elevated metro stations and the estimated cost for the extension work would be Rs 5458.06 cr.
Submission of detailed feasibility reports:
It is noteworthy that the detailed feasibility reports for recommending the extension of corridor5 in metro phase 2 from Koyambedu to Avadi via Thirumangalam, Mogappair plus the extension of corridor 3 from Siruseri to Kilambakkam bus terminus was submitted By Mr. Siddique, MD of CMRL to Mr. Ramesh Chand Mena, additional chief secretary.
Following the recent developments like IT Park, land availability etc in Pattabiram, the extension of metro phase-2 from Koyambedu to Avadi was recommended by CMRL. During the DPR stage, CMRL is also considering the extension of metro train services from Avadi to Pattabiram. After an extensive alignment study is completed, then the total number of stations would also be finalised. Ridership would decide the extension from Siruseri to Kilambakkam bus terminus. Information gathered is that CMRL has suggested improved city bus services in that important stretch towards Kilambakkam bus terminus.
According to a release from CMRL it was clear that further study was recommended in the south extension towards Thiruporur, Mahabalipuram via Kelambakkam with residential and industrial developments etc. There are also some plans to extend the present airport stretch to Kilambakkam linking Wimco Nagar and Central metro stations. Point is that this project was not included in phase-2. Despite the recommendation from the Public Investment Board 2 years ago, the Rs 61843 cr phase-2 project is yet to be cleared.
