Few months back, it was mentioned that the preliminary works have started regarding establishing a passenger terminal at Nagapattinam in south Tamil Nadu. At that time, it was said that it would take atleast 6 months to operate a passenger ferry between Nagai and Sri Lanka. An amount of Rs 8 crores was sanctioned by the Ministry of External Affairs. Things have moved well in the right direction.
Now, the latest news is that the above said ferry service would begin from the month of October. This was brought to light yesterday 20th September 2023 by the PWD minister, Mr. EV. Velu. He conducted a review meeting over the ongoing works to commence a high passenger ferry from Nagapattinam to Kankesanthurai Port in Sri Lanka.
Features of the ferry trip:
It is worth mentioning here that the route would cover a distance of 60 nautical miles. The ferry would be able to accommodate as many as 150 passengers at a time. Information is that the ferry operations would be initiated by the Shipping Corporation of India and controlled by CISF
