If you happen to pass through the reservoir at Red Hills in Chennai now, then you would be totally surprised!!
The water hyacinth here has been cleared or removed by the state water resources dept. It is known that this water hyacinth occupied a vast area of 26lakhs sq ft. It took 2 months for the staff to clear the water hyacinth here.
It was revealed by an engineer from WD that the growth of water hyacinth here was mainly because of several thousand houses letting their sewage into the reservoir. He spoke about how the main area was Thirumullaivoyal (under the Avadi municipal corporation) and the underground sewage system was not installed here. As a result, all the domestic water drains into the inlet channels of the reservoir.
It is really shocking to note that the inlet channels that were created to bring water into the reservoirs carry sewage from the houses. This was as per a Botanist Mr. Narasimhan. He mentioned that the invasive water hyacinth would thrive when there was a heavy sewage flow into the reservoir or water body. The invasive water hyacinth would help in the breeding of the mosquitoes is known.
The authorities from WRD mentioned that they have given water hyacinth and its seeds to NGO so that they could be converted into manures. It is noteworthy that the invasive weed and the seeds could be converted into manures by burning them. By this, the invasive species would get destroyed from spreading.
