The Chembarambakkam reservoir currently has a water level of 22.05 feet, which is just 1.05 feet below its maximum height of 23 feet. The total capacity of the reservoir is 3132 million cubic feet (cft). Due to recent heavy and persistent rainfall, the inflow of water into the reservoir has increased significantly. As of the measurements taken on Sunday, October 8th, the inflow was 393 cft, while the outflow was 138 cft.

As a precautionary measure, it was decided to release 100 cft of water from the Chembarambakkam reservoir in the First Phase. This decision prompted the authorities to issue a flood alert warning to residents living near the reservoir, and they were subsequently relocated to safer locations.

In response to the situation, Tamil Nadu State Minister for Small, Micro and Medium Industries, Tha. Ko. Anbarasan, and Kanchipuram District Collector Kalaichelvi Mohan conducted Poojas (religious ceremonies) and then initiated the release of excess water from the reservoir.

It`s worth noting that there are 19 eye-sluice dams in the Chembarambakkam reservoir, and water was specifically released from sluice dams 8, 10, and 12.

The water discharge is being carried out as a precaution to prevent the reservoir from reaching its maximum capacity due to continuous rainfall. Officials have indicated that the release may be increased further depending on the evolving situation.
