NE monsoons and flooding are closely associated is a well known fact.
To ensure that there is no flooding on the roads in Chennai due to the ongoing metro phase-2 works in this forthcoming NE monsoon season, CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited has come out with a superb plan now.
It is learnt that an elaborate plan has been chalked out by CMRL to make sure that the project work doesn`t not lead to flooding or exacerbate water logging during heavy rains.
On both elevated stretches as well as on the underground stretches, flood mitigation measures have been planned now. This was pointed out by an official from CMRL. He added that more focus would be given to those areas with underground stations and having small stretches of tunnels. To clear the flood water, many pumps have been kept ready now.
According to an official it was clear that the stagnant water that would get collected in the underground stations would be pumped out and directed through the pipelines to the nearby SWD. The stagnant water would also be sent to nearby water bodies or canals also.
Identification of vulnerable spots:
Both GCC as well as CMRL have joined hands to identify the vulnerable spots in each of the 15 zones. As per an officer from GCC, It is now brought out that there might not be any issue on the elevated stretches because the water might accumulate within the sites. He concluded that CMRL has been making alternative arrangements for draining water in those places where the SWD had to be demolished.
