In response to relentless protests and demands from Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) residents, the state government has suspended user fee collection at the Navalur toll plaza, effective immediately. Chief Minister MK Stalin, fulfilling their election promises, announced the decision during a conference in Chengalpattu.
While this move eases the burden for OMR commuters, it`s crucial to understand that the suspension applies solely to the Navalur toll plaza. Full user fees on national highway stretches will continue, even beyond contract periods. Previously, tolls on these stretches decreased to 40% after projects reverted to government control. The revised policy seeks to ensure the recovery of entire project costs and standardize toll collection practices. Toll charges will undergo annual revisions, ensuring project costs and land acquisition expenses are recouped in full, acknowledging the financial realities of such projects.
