The movement of the pedestrians on the platforms has been blocked till now in Nelson Manickam Road in Chennai. The shops present on the platforms here have been the main reason for this.
Yesterday, GCC joined hands with Chennai city police and removed about 110 shops that were present on the platforms. It must be taken into account that these shops were blocking the movement of the pedestrians over a stretch of 2km on both sides from Loyola College subway and Ampa Skywalk on Nelson Manickam Road.
The eviction of shops has been organised by the Chennai city traffic east zone under the Call for Action Initiative. It is known that the team earlier had successfully removed unauthorised obstructions and abandoned vehicles parked on the road side, platforms in places such as Pudupet, Anna Nagar, Egmore etc. It is noteworthy that the presence of encroachments has forced the public to walk on the roads. In addition, many people park their vehicles on the roads permanently also.
To remove the encroachments from the platforms in very busy localities like Greams Road and Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai etc in Chennai, similar raids would be conducted in the future.
