Tamil Nadu Government Steps In to Tackle Soaring Onion Prices

To counter the skyrocketing onion prices, the Tamil Nadu government has initiated a measure to provide relief to consumers. Ten Pannai Pasumai shops and four mobile shops in the city have started selling onions at a subsidized rate of ₹30 per kilogram.

The move is part of a market intervention strategy, with cooperative stores expected to follow suit. The effort aims to target low-income areas and reduce the financial burden on consumers.

By procuring onions from the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (Nafed) at ₹25 per kilogram, and including additional costs, cooperative shops can offer onions at ₹30 per kilogram. This comes as a relief as onion prices had surged to ₹80–₹100 per kilogram in some retail outlets.
