The Director of the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, K. Balachandran, has informed that a new cyclone is likely to develop in the upper layers of the atmosphere over the Bay of Bengal near South Andaman on the 26th of November. Due to this, there are prospects for heavy rains in Tamil Nadu for three days.
In a press conference held in Chennai Metro City, Director K. Balachandran shared the current weather situation:
"A cyclonic formation is prevailing in the lower layers of the atmosphere over Tamil Nadu and the adjacent Kerala district. This has resulted in widespread rains in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikkal. As of 8.30 AM yesterday (Wednesday, 22nd November), the maximum rainfall of 170 mm has been recorded in Tirupur. Additionally, heavy rains were reported in 15 places and very heavy rains in 5 places.
There are prospects for very heavy rains in the districts of Nilgiri, Coimbatore, Theni, and Dindigul, as well as in the districts adjacent to the Western Ghat Mountain range today (Thursday, 23rd November). There are also prospects for very heavy rains in 1 or 2 places in the delta districts.
Chennai Metro City and its suburbs will remain generally cloudy. There are prospects for medium to heavy rains with lightning and thunder in a few places in the city.
Regarding the low-pressure zone, there are prospects for a low-pressure zone to form in the upper levels of the atmosphere over the Bay of Bengal, South Andaman Sea, and the adjacent region on the 26th of November. This low-pressure zone is likely to drift towards the west-northwest and may transform into a strong depression zone over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjacent Andaman Sea. It is expected that this depression zone will drift further towards coastal Andhra.
Fishermen in these areas are warned to return to land before the 26th of November.
