It is known that due to Karthigai Deepam festival the rates of flowers went up in the Koyambedu market in Chennai. Yesterday was muhurtha naal and the flower traders expected a huge increase in the flower prices but it didn`t happen. The reason for that was due to heavy rains in the city. There was also a reduction in the number of flower traders from suburban places at the market yesterday.
The flower business went down yesterday. The jasmine flower was sold at Rs 600 for one kilo, kanakambaram flowers was sold for Rs 500 per kilo. Ice malli was sold for Rs 400 per kilo. Likewise flowers like mullai and jaathimalli were sold for Rs 400 per kilo. Arli flower was sold for Rs 150 per kilo, marigold for Rs 100, sampangi for Rs 60 etc.
According to Mr. Muthuraj, Koyambedu Flower Market Managing Committee Chairman, the heavy rains in Chennai have led to the reduction in the arrival of traders at the market from suburban places in the city. This has resulted in the steep decline in the flower prices.
