Getting quality engineering education within the neighbourhoods would soon become a reality, thanks to the new rule!!

It is known that until now just state universities and deemed universities can set up off campuses and colleges in TN. This is going to change and from the academic year 2024-25 onwards, top engineering colleges would be able to set up off campuses within the jurisdiction of the affiliated university. This was as per the new approval process handbook of All India Council for Technical Education or AICTE.

The handbook for 2024-2027 mentioned that the existing affiliating institutions alone should be permitted to introduce off-campus on the lines of constituent colleges of state or central universities within the jurisdiction of the affiliated universities. Information is that AICTE would allow one off campus for a college and the norms would be released soon. This was mentioned by Mr. Abhay Jere, vice-chairman to the college principals during an online meeting.

Various standards that an engineering college would have to meet to set up off campus institution are

  • · It should have completed 10 years of functioning

  • · It should meet any of these criteria like featuring in the NIRF 2023 ranking or QS World Ranking Asia 2024 or having minimum of 50% eligible courses with NBA accreditation (with validity till 2025) or NAAC score of 3.01 and more or autonomous state conferred by UGC or autonomy by AICTE

  • · Having more than 80% admission consecutively in the last 5 academic years.

According to Mr. Abhay Meganathan of Rajalakshmi Group of Educational Institutions in Chennai, this would make the students in the tier-2 cities get quality engineering education.

It was later explained by P. Deiva Sundari, principal of Chennai Institute of Technology and Applied Research that by this the rural students would get quality education at an affordable cost.

Recently, AICTE has also removed the upper age limit regarding intake of the students for top colleges from the next academic year. By these 2 decisions, the top colleges would be able to expand and affect the enrollment in mid level colleges.

Hibernation period:

It is now revealed that the AICTE would also introduce a hibernation period for the engineering colleges from 2024-25. Under this move, the engg colleges would get a three year time to revamp and upgrade their facilities. For the working professionals, the institutions would be offering an additional division in each course. Shortage of faculty in the emerging areas would also be addressed.
