On Monday, 11th December, the 142nd birth anniversary of Mahakavi C Subramanya Bharathy was celebrated across Tamil Nadu. It is noteworthy that many paid their tributes to the great poet.
In Chennai, there were many cultural activities and a procession with Jathi Pallakku took place from Sri Parthasarathy Swami temple to Bharathiyar Memorial House in Triplicane.
In other districts in TN, many programmes were held and the birth anniversary of Bharathiyar was celebrated in a grand manner.
It is worthy to note that in the Madurai based Sethupathy Boys Higher Secondary school Bharathiyar worked as a teacher. Many Tamil literary scholars garlanded the Bharathiyar statue present in the school campus. It is known that Ettayapuram in the district of Thoothukudi is the birthplace of Bharathiyar and here the 142nd birthday celebrations assumed great significance.
The statue of Bharathiyar (present in his house in Ettayapuram) was garlanded by many important personalities like Mr. G.V. Markandeyan, MLA, Collector Lakshmipathy, Ettayapuram Tahsildar etc.
On his birth anniversary yesterday, programmes took place and many students dressed like Bharathiyar and grabbed the attention. The statue of the legendary Tamil poet at Perungudi in Madurai was garlanded by Mr. Mohan who was the former caretaker of the poet house in Ettayapuram.
