On Wednesday, December 20th, Nitin Gadkari, the Central Minister for Transport, announced that the central government is planning to introduce the latest technology system at all toll gate locations to facilitate toll payment through GPS.
He revealed that this initiative aims to significantly reduce traffic congestion, with toll charges being calculated based on the exact distance traveled by vehicles. The Central Minister emphasized that the toll collection through GPS, utilizing cutting-edge technology, will be implemented nationwide at all toll gates starting from March next year.
The Central Ministry of Roadways had previously introduced a system for automatic toll charge collection by capturing the registration number of passing vehicles through installed cameras.
To advance the toll collection system further, a collaborative effort between the central government and the private sector will be undertaken. This joint infrastructure project, operating under the Point of Transfer (POT) system, will be deployed on national highways shorter than 1000 km. The tender for this project will be issued before the implementation of rules and regulations for the upcoming Parliamentary election.
