The sensational news that has emerged out now is that Anna Centenary Library or ACL in Chennai would soon be providing free internet services to all readers from the first week of January.
This free internet connectivity would make many to venture into e-book collections and digital libraries. At present, a trial is going on regarding free Wi-Fi for all. This was according to some officials.
About a month back, 25 modems were installed at the sprawling Anna Centenary library and this was done as a part of the preparations. Trials have been conducted at each section once modems were installed. Two or three modems have been set up in each floor at the library as per the requirements of each section and at each floor of the building. This was according to a senior officer from ACL. On the weekdays, this library witnesses about 1400 visitors and about 1500 on the weekends.
It is well known that free internet connection is available even now in this library but it is only for the members and that on the seventh floor only. Information is that the library has about 5000 members and it has more than 6lakhs books.
