Most of the seats in the govt based buses are full now due to the Pongal festival season and the ticket fares in the omni buses have increased. This has been making lives difficult for many passengers now.
The Pongal festival falls on 15th January and many govt employees, students etc would leave Chennai to their hometowns for the Pongal festival on 12th January itself. It must be noted that in the 20 govt buses going from Chennai to Tirunelveli the seats are already full now. In this scenario, omni bus fares are also increased. The passengers have mentioned that the bus fares now are higher than the normal bus fares.
It is really shocking to note that just for the seating facility itself the omni buses now charge Rs 2000 from Chennai for long distance journeys to many southern places across TN. Point is that many people have spent about Rs 6000 now for their return trip to Chennai from the natives after celebrating New Year. They have been finding it difficult now for the upcoming Pongal festival trip to their native places again.
As per some officers from the transport department it was clear that more than 35000 people have booked their tickets to go to their hometowns for the upcoming Pongal festival. On 8th January, a meeting would be held under the minister of transport leadership. The announcement regarding operation of special buses would be made after the meeting. Truth is that continuous monitoring of omni buses that charge an extra amount has been going on.
