Last week, the TN government acquired and handed over the land of 627.89 acres to the Airport Authority of India or AAI for its expansion. Now, there is a huge demand to resume flight services from Coimbatore to places like Singapore, Dubai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru etc.
A conglomeration of trade bodies from western TN, Kongu Global Forum or KGF has urged Air India to resume flight services to the above said places from the Coimbatore airport to promote trade.
Chairman of KGF, Mr. A. Shakthivel in his letter to Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express has mentioned that goods worth Rs 1 lakh crores were exported from 9 western districts in the last FY.
He added that even though the flight services to Mumbai from Coimbatore were increased, frequent delayed departure has denied an opportunity for the passengers to travel beyond Mumbai.
The domestic as well as international passengers (especially exporters) in the western region would benefit by introducing direct flights to Delhi in the mornings and evenings from Coimbatore.
