The price of tamarind in the open market in Tamilnadu is Rs 100 per kilo causing distress to common man. The Tamilnadu Government in order to bring down the price of tamarind has now decided to purchase 600,000 kg of tamarind from wholesalers in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Salem districts and sell it to the general public at Rs.60 kg through the cooperative stores and Amudham Departmental Stores.
A sum of Rs.3.30 Crore will be used out of the Rs.100 Crore price stabilisation fund for sourcing the tamarind.
The statement said the government has procured 45,000 quintals of rice in the open market and sold at Rs.20 per kg which has resulted in reigning in the galloping rice prices in the open market.
