Driverless metro trains would be manufactured with additional safety features in the second phase metro train project.
It is well known to us that in 3 important routes like Madhavaram- Siruseri SIPCOT of 45.4km, Light House- Poonamallee bypass of 26.1km and Madhavaram- Sholinganallur of 44.6km for a total distance of 116.1 km metro projects are going on now. I the second phase for the construction of railway stations and for trains operation etc new technologies are used.
The CMRL has already mentioned that after completing the metro works in the above said 3 routes 138 driverless trains would be operated to transport the public. There would be 3 coaches in the driverless trains and in the first phase CMRL has awarded the contract to Alsthom Transport to manufacture 36 driverless trains with 3 coaches each. This company would be manufacturing 108 train coaches. Since the trains would be driverless, huge attention is being given now for the additional safety features in these trains.
According to some officials belonging to CMRL it was confirmed that when in the phase 2 metro works get completed for a total distance of 116.1km and when the trains operate in 2028 there would be metro trains only everywhere. The passengers would be able to travel quickly in these metro trains in Chennai at reasonable rates.
It must be noted that soon a new technology called CBTC or Computer Based Train Control System would be implemented for the operation of trains. This new technology would be very important to run the driverless metro trains in Chennai. The trains would run at speed of 80kmph so for a maximum of 90seconds one train would be operated.
It is learnt that the metro trains would have extra space for comfortable standing of the passengers plus additional CCTV cameras, mobile phones charging facilities. Point is that these trains would have wide open emergency doors on both sides of façade. This is mainly for the quick evacuation of the passengers during emergency situations etc.
