Due to the Pongal festival, also known as `Thamizhar Thirunaal,` a significant number of citizens, along with their families, visited their native places. The festival, celebrated on Monday, 15th January, led to the closure of schools, colleges, and offices for a five-day holiday period, starting from 13th January until the 17th of January.
Many individuals who work in Chennai Metro City took the opportunity to spend time with their families and left for their respective native places on Friday, 12th January, to celebrate Pongal.
Now, in the aftermath of the festival, these citizens are returning to their residences in Chennai Metro City since yesterday evening, Wednesday, 17th January. This influx of returning travelers has resulted in severe traffic congestion along the Tambaram GST Road and in the Perungalathur area.
Responding to the situation, the Chennai Metro City Traffic Police have taken swift action and are actively organizing traffic flow to alleviate the acute congestion.
