Chennai Metro Rail has initiated the demolition of a segment of the flyover at the Royapettah High Road-Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai junction to make way for an underground station in the phase II project.
The Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai station, falling under corridor 3 of the 116 km project, necessitates the removal of part of the flyover. The demolition is expected to conclude in one or two months, with traffic diversions continuing until the completion of the underground station, estimated to take three years. The station will be constructed at a depth of 15-18 meters, featuring two entry/exit points. The entire process is being executed with precautionary measures to ensure safety.
The reconstruction of the flyover will follow the station`s completion. This development is part of the ₹61,843 crore phase II project, which also includes the partial removal of the Adyar flyover for the construction of the Adyar Junction station. The ongoing construction of Corridor 4 (Light House to Poonamallee) and Corridor 5 (Madhavaram to Sholinganallur) is progressing as planned.
