At the CMDA headquarters, a review meeting took place and it was chaired by the minister for transport Mr. S.S. Sivashankar. It is learnt that the minister has asked the police to take strict action against those omni buses bound for southern districts from entering Chennai.
It is well known to us that omni bus drivers as well as the passengers are not happy regarding the sudden shifting of omni bus operations from the newly inaugurated bus terminus at Kilambakkam.
Point is that the SETC or state express transport corporation has begun to operate south bound buses from Kilambakkam bus terminus. Now, the TN govt has decided to shift the operations of omni buses from Koyambedu to Kilambakkam from 24th January onwards.
A proceeding note issued by the transport commission clearly mentioned that no south bound omni buses with passengers could enter Chennai beyond Kilambakkam . It added that only empty omni buses could enter Chennai. The note also requested the police to make sure that only buses bound for north and west could use the Koyambedu bus terminus.
It was revealed that in case of violation of rules strict action would be taken against the bus operator for violation and this would be according to the provision of Motor Vehicles Act and Rules. Information collected is that the transport commission wrote to the online bus ticket booking app to remove the pickup and dropping points of omnibuses in Chennai.
In this scenario, the omni bus owners associations have urged the govt to allow their operations from Koyambedu until the parking facility is completed at Varadharajapuram. It was later brought out by some sources belonging to SETC that if omni buses were allowed to operate only from Koyambedu then their revenue would get affected.
