One of the highly busy localities in Chennai is Mylapore and this is making news now!!
It is well known that Mylapore has many temples and is an important shopping hub. Travelling in this locality has become a nightmare for many now with lots of diversions, circuitous routes and dust filled unrepaired roads etc creating huge problems. In another 4 years or so, Thirumayilai would have a large metro train station to link Mylapore with north, west and southern places in Chennai.
The commuters as well as the residents here are unhappy regarding the recent traffic diversions that has come into effect due to the construction of the underground station.
As many vehicles are diverted through narrow streets here, there is now very heavy traffic congestion. The commuters have explained that the roads on narrow streets like Thiruvengadam Street, Mundakanniamman Koil Street, St Marys Road etc were unmotorable.
It was later mentioned by a shop owner in Thiruvengadam Street that rerouting buses on this road doesn`t make any sense. He added that the street was already in bad condition and with buses passing it has become worse. He concluded that the government must operate mini buses exclusively in the area and improve the street condition on priority basis.
It was then brought to light by a commuter that the abandoned vehicles and encroachments have been creating issues and the congestion would ease if these are removed. By going through narrow streets, the commuters spend more money on travel as well as on the fuel now. This would affect the middle class and poor ones. The auto drivers here are unhappy regarding the roundabout route thy have to take
