An important lake present in Chennai has not undergone any de-silting for several decades!! Sound`s shocking right!!
The superb piece of news that has come out now is that a comprehensive project to rejuvenate Retteri Lake has started. The lake is present on a sprawling area of more than 400a acres is known to us. It is now said that Rs 43.19 r would be spent for the renovation of Retteri Lake. By this, the storage capacity of the lake would be increased. Dewatering process work is now underway here and by this deepening and de-silting of the water body would be facilitated.
To remove the accumulated silt, the WRD has begun work to pump out water and dry the lake bed. It was later brought to light out by some officials from WRD that nearly 7lak cubic metres of silt would be cleared from Retteri Lake.
It is a fact that this lake has not undergone any desilting work for many decades now. In 2017, WRD carried out eco-restoration efforts like setting up of walking tracts etc here. The officers explained that they are having plans to build 3 islands on the lake as a nesting ground for birds. From the current 32mcft, the storage capacity would be increased to 46 mcft soon.
Information is that vegetation would be removed and damaged footpaths would be repaired for up to 300m along the Inner Ring Road or IRR. In the future, it would not be possible for the public to dump garbage into the lake as WRD besides strengthening the bunds would also build a compound wall for 3kms.Fencing would be carried out on the stretch of lake along the GNT Road. This was mentioned by an official from WRD.
