The Commissioner of Food Safety and Drug Administration as recommended by the National Green Tribunal has started taking firm action on the unlicensed units producing ‘herbal’ or ‘flavored’ water. As the first step, Food Safety and Drug Administration Department of Tiruvallur closed down 57 of such units on Wednesday.
Followed by this, 150 units in Chennai Metropolitan and 36 units in Kancheepuram district were served with the closure order. Those units that have no objection certificates or product approval from Food Safety and Standards Authority of India are safe. The strong protests from the Members of the Tamil Nadu Packaged Drinking Water Manufacturers Association play a significant move for the crackdown.
