The construction of underground stations for Chennai Metro Rail`s Phase II Project has commenced at key locations in southern Chennai, including Thirumayilai, Mandaveli, and Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai.

These stations are part of the 45.4-km corridor 3 (Madhavaram-SIPCOT) in the 116-km Phase II project, estimated at ₹61,843 crore. Work on other corridors, Light House to Poonamallee (corridor 4) and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (corridor 5), is progressing rapidly.

The initiation of construction at Thirumayilai, Mandaveli, and Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai stations marks a significant milestone, overcoming past delays in tendering and contracting.

According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials, the initial construction phase has begun, with an estimated completion time of two years. Thirumayilai presents unique challenges due to its depth of 115 ft and multiple entry points, while Mandaveli and Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai are progressing with the construction of diaphragm walls.

CMRL`s contractor is currently demolishing the culvert bridge over Buckingham Canal near Thirumayilai MRTS station to make way for station construction, with plans to reconstruct the bridge upon completion of station works.
