Southern Railway (SR) is currently undertaking the redevelopment of Egmore Railway Station, a vital artery in the region. The project, which was awarded a tender in October 2022, is progressing with construction underway at an estimated cost of Rs 734.91 crore.
In response to the ongoing restoration efforts, Southern Railway sources have announced the imminent opening of a temporary ticket counter at the Egmore station`s exit side on EVK Sampath Road. This counter will cater to passengers until the redevelopment is scheduled for completion by 2025.
Egmore station, being one of the four main terminuses in the city, experiences significant foot traffic, particularly during peak hours. Despite already housing two unreserved and three reserved counters, long queues remain a common sight.
In light of the restoration work, passengers are advocating for improved amenities. Murugan, a disabled individual, highlights the need for seating and rest facilities near the ticket counters, especially for those with mobility challenges. Additionally, many elderly and illiterate passengers rely on traditional ticket counters due to unfamiliarity with digital alternatives like the UTS app or ATVM machines.
Addressing these concerns, passengers emphasize the importance of accessibility and urge railways to ensure sufficient ticket counters to accommodate diverse needs.
