The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has started constructing a new pond near Villivakkam Lake at a cost of Rs 7.90 crore. This project, handed over to a private contractor, aims to boost local water sources and enhance the area`s green cover.
Key features of the project include:
Pond Details: The pond will cover a catchment area of 11,530 sq.m and hold 52,200 cubic metres of water.
Pedestrian Walkway: A 900-meter long, 4-meter wide paved walkway.
Green Initiatives: Native plant species will be planted over 11,400 sq.m, and hardscapes such as trellises, a butterfly garden, tree court, maze, and seating areas will be developed.
Children’s Play Area: A dedicated play area for children will be established.
Facilities: Toilets, including those for differently-abled visitors, will be built.
Surface Runoff Management: Surface runoff will be channeled to the pond, and excess water during monsoons will be diverted to the main water body.
Embankment Stabilization: Geo Cell construction will be used for soil stabilization and erosion control.
Regular maintenance of the pond will be managed by the contractor, with inspections by zonal level officials.
