The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a yellow alert for Tamil Nadu, forecasting heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds over the next 48 hours.
The meteorological department predicts squally weather with wind speeds ranging from 35 km/h to 45 km/h, with gusts up to 55 km/h, over the Gulf of Mannar and the south Tamil Nadu coast. Chennai and its suburbs can expect light to moderate rain with occasional heavy spells.
Moderate westerlies and southwesterlies in the lower tropospheric levels are contributing to rainfall, especially over the Western Ghats and coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. Thunderstorms are anticipated across the state during the evening and night.
Fishermen are advised to avoid the sea until July 8, with deep-sea trawlers urged to return to shore immediately.
Similar alerts have been issued for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya, where red rainfall alerts are in place. Heavy rain is also expected today in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Bihar.
