On Friday, a widespread issue with Microsoft`s cloud services led to significant disruptions at Chennai Airport, causing delays for over 50 departing flights and the cancellation of 28 flights scheduled from evening till midnight. The global outage affected multiple Microsoft 365 and Azure cloud services.
Among the disrupted flights were:
- Chennai-Delhi IndiGo Airlines at 5:55 PM, 9:05 PM, and 11:05 PM
- Bangalore-Chennai IndiGo Airlines at 7:45 PM
- Delhi-Chennai IndiGo Airlines at 10:25 PM and 12:20 AM
In total, 14 arrival and departure flights at Chennai Airport were cancelled, and over 50 outgoing flights faced delays exceeding 3 hours. Thousands of passengers experienced hardship due to the disruptions.
The issue, caused by a minor software glitch, led to cancellations of flights to cities such as Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Indore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, and Goa. IndiGo Airlines was particularly impacted, with 28 inbound flights cancelled from major metropolitan hubs.
Chennai airport authorities reported some improvement in services later in the day. While airlines like Air India, SpiceJet, and Vistara resumed online operations, IndiGo Airlines continued to face disruptions. Efforts are underway to fully restore flight services by midnight.
