The sensational piece of news that has come out now is that in another 3 months that is by October ballastless tracks to test driverless metro trains would be ready at the Poonamalee depot.
It is now said that by November 2025 depot is likely to be opened along with the first stretch of phase 2 from Porur to Poonamallee on corridor-4 with 10 stations. All the metro trains that are operated on corridor 4 from Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass would be serviced in this depot.
The Director (Projects), CMRL, Mr. T. Archunan explained that the test track would be ready by the month of October. He added that once the metro trains arrive it would undergo trials on the test tracks for 2 months and trials on the elevated corridor. It is learnt that 75% of work regarding the construction of Poonamallee depot has been completed.
According to an office from CMRL, in the coming months the construction of stabling shed and workshop shed would be completed. By March 2025, the roof of Poonamallee station nearby would be completed.
Phase-2 corridor to open in stages:
There would be 3 corridors present in the phase-2 and it would be opened in stages between 2025 and 2028. Now, along 25% of the stretch from Porur to Poonamallee, ballastless tracks have been installed. For a stretch of 100m to 120m every day, railway tracks are being laid now. It must be recalled that the officials have mentioned previously that the stretch from Power House to Porur (also part of corridor 4) would begin to function around 6 months after Porur- Poonamallee stretch opens for service. A double decker corridor between Alwarthirunagar and Alapakkam covering about 4km with 4 stations would be present along the Power House- Porur stretch.
