The Tamil Nadu government has increased seat capacity by 20% in Arts and Science colleges, with adjustments of 15% in government-aided colleges and 10% in self-financing institutions. The Higher Education Department is evaluating infrastructure needs, including labs and basic amenities, to accommodate this growth.
A senior official stated that the government has allocated Rs 100 crore for upgrading infrastructure in over 30 government colleges, managed by the Public Works Department. Colleges with increased enrollments must report to their affiliated universities for admission permissions.
The increase in admissions will be reviewed annually, and colleges must prevent dropouts from the additional intake. Self-financing colleges are required to adhere to norms and cannot request extra teaching staff despite the increased enrollment.
