The cancellation of 55 electric trains over the weekend led to severe traffic congestion on the Tambaram-GST Road. Passengers resorted to using personal vehicles and city buses as special train services were insufficient, overwhelming the already understaffed traffic police.
Ongoing renovation work at Tambaram Railway Yard, which started on July 23, has disrupted both long-distance express and suburban electric trains. Initially, only long-distance trains were affected, but the recent suspension of 55 suburban trains has worsened the situation.
Despite the transport department`s promise to increase bus services, the provision has been inadequate, causing overcrowding. From August 3 to August 14, all daytime electric trains will be cancelled, likely exacerbating travel difficulties. Passengers are urging the Metropolitan Transport Corporation to enhance bus services to meet the increased demand.
Additionally, the cancellation of 10 special electric trains between Chennai Beach and Guduvancheri since July 23 has caused significant inconvenience for commuters traveling to the Kilambakkam Bus Terminal. Passengers are calling for the partial reinstatement of these services by the railway administration.
