The Greater Chennai Corporation has proposed significant increases in taxes and fees, including trade licenses and professional tax, during a recent council meeting on Tuesday.
Trade license fees have almost doubled, reaching up to Rs 30,000 for businesses such as cinema studios and ice cream parlors. Fees for bakeries, medical shops, and hair salons have increased by up to Rs 10,000, while textile shops face a hike of up to Rs 15,000.
Professional tax rates have been increased by 35% for those earning between Rs 21,000 and Rs 60,000 per month, with no changes for higher income brackets.
In response to the cattle menace causing injuries, fines for owners allowing cattle to roam the streets have increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 per animal, and up to Rs 15,000 for repeat offenses.
