RI Dist 3234 is set to launch a groundbreaking awareness campaign aimed at revitalizing the city`s vital waterways. The initiative, "Clean Rivers, Green City," will kick off with a human chain formation near the Government Estate metro station.
Once the lifeblood of Chennai`s socio-economic and cultural development, the Adyar, Cooum, and Buckingham Canal rivers now face critical challenges. These historic waterways, which previously served as inland transportation routes and centers of social activity, have been reduced to mere drainage systems and sewage outlets.
Dr. V. Irulandi, Chairperson of the Clean Rivers Avenue project, stated, "Our rivers are progressing towards a `dead` status. It`s time we take action to restore their beauty and functionality."
The campaign will feature:
• Participation from 300 individuals, including Rotary members, NCC cadets, school and college students, and concerned citizens.
• Human chain formations along riverbanks.
• Display of educational placards and posters.
• Participants taking a pledge to save our rivers.
The inaugural event will take place on August 4, 2024, from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM near the Government Estate metro station junction. All Chennai residents are invited to join this crucial environmental initiative.
By engaging youth, students, industrialists, and the general public, RI Dist 3234 aims to spark a city-wide movement towards river conservation and sustainable urban development. The district plans to conduct quarterly awareness events in different parts of Chennai to save our rivers.
