TBM Siruvani Completes Key Tunneling Milestone for Chennai Metro Rail Corridor 3!

The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Siruvani, part of Chennai Metro Rail`s Corridor 3 Phase II construction, reached Sterling Road junction on Monday after starting from Chetpet Station on September 9, 2023. It covered a 703-meter tunnel, including a 51-meter stretch under the Cooum River, and broke through at Sterling Road on August 5.
 
Corridor 3, spanning 45.4 km from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Siruseri SIPCOT, includes 28 underground and 19 elevated stations. The project, funded by JICA, ADB, AIIB, and NDB, involves Larsen & Toubro (L&T) executing the 12 km underground section from Kellys to Taramani using eight TBMs.
 
Chennai Metro Rail Phase II covers 116.1 km across three corridors, employing 23 TBMs for underground station construction. Phase I and its extension, operational over 45 km, includes 32 stations, with 13 elevated and 19 underground.
