The Chennai District Collector has initiated inspections in congested areas, including Saidapet, to facilitate the issuance of pattas for residential properties.
Health Minister Ma. Subramanian, speaking during the inspection in Saidapet, stated that the District Collector will continue inspecting various neighborhoods to determine the issuance of pattas for lands where residents have constructed homes. He noted that half of Saidapet is classified as ‘natham poromboke,’ and many residents have lived there for years without pattas. Although one-fourth of the residents received pattas in 1973, many are still awaiting them. The Collector will review petitions from residents and visit each area to make a decision.
Chennai Corporation covers approximately 424 sq. km with a population of around one crore across 200 wards. Many families have lived for generations in houses built on lands such as ‘natham poromboke,’ water courses, and temple lands, but they lack pattas. The residents have appealed to the Chief Minister for patta issuance. After inspecting various congested neighborhoods, the Collector will submit a report to the government regarding the patta issuance.
The inspection on Thursday covered areas including Abdul Razak Street, Chetty Thottam, Samiyar Thottam, Nehru Nagar, Kallikundram, Kannigapuram, and Kotturpuram Ellaiamman Thottam, with GCC Deputy Mayor Magesh Kumar in attendance.
