Chennai may receive 3 TMC of Krishna river water from Andhra Pradesh`s Kandaleru reservoir this month due to recent southwest monsoon rains. The delay in April was due to low storage, but recent intense rainfall has raised reservoir levels.
A senior Water Resources Department official stated that water would be released when the reservoir reaches capacity. However, if rains lessen, the release might be delayed again. While Andhra Pradesh is supposed to release 12 TMC annually, only 8 TMC has been discharged due to Tamil Nadu`s substantial northeast monsoon rainfall.
Chennai is expected to receive only 3 TMC this year as reservoirs already have sufficient water and the northeast monsoon is approaching. Current water levels are: Red Hills (2,490 mcft), Poondi (86 mcft), Chembarambakkam (1,491 mcft), Cholavaram (98 mcft), Kannankottai Thervoy Kandigai (307 mcft), and Veeranam (1,270 mcft).
