Chennai`s roads are in disarray due to ongoing Metro Rail construction and stormwater drain (SWD) projects. Alongside these, various departments, including the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) and Tangedco, are carrying out road-cut works, adding to the disruption.
Despite instructions from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to avoid digging up newly re-laid roads for at least six months unless it`s an emergency, several roads have been excavated multiple times. This lack of coordination has resulted in many roads remaining damaged and not being properly re-laid after maintenance.
Residents, especially in areas like Ram Nagar in Velachery and Tondiarpet, are frustrated with the poor road conditions, citing safety concerns and accidents. Multiple petitions have been submitted to the authorities, demanding better coordination and timely road repairs.
A senior GCC official acknowledged the issue and emphasized that service departments are required to restore roads immediately and pay double the charges if they dig up newly laid roads without proper justification.
