As Ayudha Pooja approaches, flower prices in Tamil Nadu’s southern districts have surged, with jasmine leading the pack. Vendors at Nilakottai, the state’s second-largest flower market, reported steep price hikes over the past few days.
Price Surge Chandran, a flower vendor from Nilakottai, shared that jasmine, which was priced at Rs 250 per kg last month, has skyrocketed to Rs 1,000 per kg. Similarly, arali poo, once sold at Rs 20 per kg, is now fetching Rs 700 per kg. Other varieties such as mullai, pichi, sendu, kozhikondai, kadhambam, and roja are also in high demand.
Sendu Poo: Rs 120 per kg
Sampangi: Increased from Rs 60 to Rs 250 per kg
Marikozhundhu: Rose from Rs 30 to Rs 100 per kg
On average, the Nilakottai market receives around 20 tonnes of flowers daily, sourced from 23 surrounding villages within a 30-km radius.
With festival demand soaring, flower markets are thriving, despite the steep prices.
