Travelling long distances either to Saligramam or Tambaram from north Chennai localities for the sake of passport application or renewal etc would soon become a thing of the past!!

Residents belonging to north Chennai could heave a sigh of relief now. The news that has come out is that the Ministry of External Affairs or MEF has taken steps to set up Post Office Passport Seva Kendra or POPSK in north Chennai.

It must not be forgotten that earlier Mr. Annamalai, BJP state president made a formal request about the need of a dedicated passport service centre in north Chennai and the inconvenience faced by the residents there regarding this.

Mr. S. Jaishankar. The Minister for external affairs had confirmed that the proposal to set up a new passport service centre in north Chennai was under active consideration. In his official correspondence, Mr. Jaishankar mentioned that a proposal to establish a POPSK/PSK in north Chennai region was under active review and the challenges faced by the north Chennai residents were taken into account.

Finalising suitable location:

To finalise a suitable location for the new facility, MEA has been associating with the Postal department. It was brought out by the Postal dept that Periyar Nagar was considered as a preferred location as it had infrastructure to accommodate the new centre. It is learnt that Postal dept has agreed to provide the necessary space for setting up of a new passport service centre at their Periyar Nagar post office as other locations don`t have the needed infrastructure.

Truth is that Mr. Annamalai welcomed this response by MEA and hoped that the centre would improve efficiency and reduce processing time for passport related services in the north Chennai region. As per Mr. K. Moorthy from Perambur, currently the north Chennai residents travel long distances (to Tambaram or Saligramam) to access passport services.

He added that with the establishment of a new passport service centre the passport application and passport renewal process would both become more accessible and streamlined for the residents of north Chennai.
