Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) is taking precautionary measures since northeast monsoon has set. TNEB has advised people to keep away from electrical and electronic appliances like TV, grinder, mixer and washing machine when there is thunder and lightning. According to state crime records bureau figures, last year alone, 506 people were electrocuted across the state, especially during the monsoon.

TNEB has requested people not to touch any line passing through the roof or terrace, especially when it rains or when there is lightning and thunder. In case electric lines are hanging too low and touching the roof, TNEB should be informed immediately.

Within a house, it is better not to touch electrical and electronic appliances, especially cable television wires.

People should avoid drying clothes on ropes tied to lamp posts. In many places, especially suburban areas, residents tie ropes between lamp posts and hang clothes on them. During a spell of rain, power can pass from the main line to the lamp post and in turn to the wet clothes.

The TNEB has also sent advisories to its offices and sub-stations, asking officials to inspect transformers and junction boxes before the monsoon advances fully into the state. TNEB employees have been advised to avoid taking leave during floods and cyclone.
