The Tamil Nadu Pollution control Board (TNPCB) in order to celebrate a pollution free Deepavali this year has flagged off 15 awareness campaign autorickshaws for each zone in Chennai to spread awareness among the people to celebrate Deepavali in a safer manner without noise pollution.
This campaign was inaugurated by M C Sampath, Minister for Environment and Saidai Duraisamy, Chennai Mayor on Tuesday. This campaign has been replicated in all other districts in Tamil Nadu as well with a total funding of Rs 10 lakh.The autorickshaws are spreading a message of caution and distribute notices with guidelines to be followed to celebrate a safe Deepavali.
Some of the guidelines are to avoid bursting of crackers during the night from 10 PM to 6 AM that will reduce both noise and air pollution and to burst crackers in open spaces like grounds that will ensure safety. It will also be easy for the workers to clean the garbage next day.
Chairman, TNPCB Sri Karthikeyan said, “To reduce noise pollution, people should not burst high decibel crackers. As per the guidelines, the maximum sound of crackers should not exceed 125 dB. People must keep first aid materials like water and sand ready while handling fire crackers. The campaign during Deepavali and Bogi has been successful till last year and has reduced the pollution considerably.”
The campaign was inaugurated in the presence of school and college students, who were asked to take a pledge of the guidelines and spread the message among their neighborhood.
